India has long been regarded as a land of mystical exoticism, where the answers to life’s big questions can be found in back alleys and byways (and where bhaang is basically legal). That’s why, like these fine gentlemen, many famous people have traveled there over the years in the hopes of attaining some form of enlightenment.

1. The Beatles

In the 1960s, the Beatles‘ Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison traveled to Rishikesh to study Transcendental Meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. They had a falling out with him, and they left after a few weeks.
